Nokia has finally released the much awaited Amber update that applies to the AT&T Lumia 920 and 820 devices. The release has been pending since August but it’s good to see the update finally arriving which has been made available OTA. AT&T though is suggesting the update be downloaded via a WiFi connection. Also, the Amber update is applicable to the Lumia range of smartphones and should also end up on other device in the series, which includes the Lumia 720, Lumia 620, Lumia 520, Lumia 928, Lumia 822, Lumia 521, and the Lumia 810.
As for the new features that the Amber update will be introducing include the ability to listen to FM radio and Data Sense. The latter is a much desirable feature in that it enables the user to keep a tab on their data usage so that they can limit the risk of going overboard their data usage limits.
This apart, Data Sense will also keep the user informed as to which apps are drawing how much of the data resource over the course of a month. Data Sense has so far been exclusive to Verizon and it’s good to see the feature is now being made available to other carriers as well. Both of these form part of Microsoft’s GDR (General Distribution Release) 2 which is included with the Amber update.
These apart, the update also includes the new Glance feature that keeps the user abreast of all pending notifications even when the device is in sleep mode. The new update also enhances the camera functionality of the Lumia 820 and 925 significantly. This includes the ability of the user to track the entire sequence of a moving object and capture the entire thing in one shot, a feature dubbed Action Shot.
Microsoft is also expected to come up with the GDR 3 update soon which will enable Windows Phone to support devices with larger display. The GDR 3 update will also make Windows Phone compatible with Qualcomm Snapdragon chips. This is expected to arrive in time with the launch of the Nokia Lumia 1520 phablet which will include a 6 inch display. Nokia is expected to launch the Lumia 1520 on October 22.
